Vivid Magenta and Yellow Japanese Jacket with Rising Koi, Crane, Turtle, Pine and Auspicious Crest Embroidery
A striking vintage DENIME reversible sukajan combining two dramatically different Japanese designs in one collectible garment.
One side explodes with saturated magenta and golden-yellow satin, centered by a silver rising koi battling through a towering waterfall. Reverse the jacket to reveal a refined ivory and taupe quilted side embroidered in gold with a crane, turtle, pine, blossoms and rolling waves.
Bold on one side and quietly ceremonial on the other, this is an especially versatile example of Japanese souvenir-jacket design.
Design and Symbolism
Magenta and Yellow Koi Side
The primary side features a rich magenta satin body framed by brilliant yellow raglan sleeves and coordinating striped ribbing.
Across the back, a large silver and charcoal koi rises through turbulent waves beneath a vertical waterfall. The composition carries the familiar Japanese association of koi with:
- Perseverance against adversity
- Ambition and upward movement
- Courage and determination
- Transformation earned through struggle
The dramatic upward-facing fish and cascading water create a sense of motion, while the silver embroidery cools and balances the jacket’s electric magenta-and-yellow palette.
The front is finished with two smaller embroidered motifs:
- A traditional samurai kabuto helmet
- A white crane in flight
Together, these introduce themes of warrior spirit, dignity, vigilance and longevity.
Ivory and Taupe Crane and Turtle Side
The reverse offers an entirely different visual atmosphere.
Its ivory quilted body is paired with taupe satin sleeves, white racing stripes and fine red piping. Gold line embroidery creates an elegant, almost drawing-like composition rather than the heavier pictorial embroidery of the koi side.
The back presents a crane descending toward a turtle resting among waves, pine branches and delicate blossoms. Crane-and-turtle imagery is an auspicious Japanese pairing associated with long life, continuity and enduring good fortune.
Pine traditionally suggests resilience and constancy, while the flowering branches introduce renewal and seasonal beauty. The front is completed with two circular gold crests, including stylized botanical and crane motifs.
DENIME Japanese Heritage
DENIME is a Japanese casualwear brand established in 1988 and known for clothing rooted in vintage-inspired design and Japanese craftsmanship.
This jacket expands beyond the brand’s denim identity into richly embroidered souvenir fashion, making it an unusual crossover piece for collectors of Japanese Americana, sukajan and vintage DENIME garments.
Construction and Details
Garment Features
- Fully reversible construction
- Magenta satin body with yellow raglan sleeves

- Large rising-koi and waterfall back embroidery
- Crane, turtle, pine, blossom and wave embroidery
- Samurai kabuto and flying-crane chest motifs

Condition
Vintage pre-owned condition with visible age-appropriate character.
The photographs show natural satin creasing, surface variation, scattered marks or discoloration, gentle wear to the ribbed trim and signs of previous use. The magenta side appears to carry more visible surface character, while the ivory and taupe side has the softly aged appearance expected from a light-colored vintage garment.
The embroidery remains visually impressive and forms the central appeal of the piece. Please examine every photograph carefully, as the images are an important part of the condition description.
Vintage garments are sold in their existing condition and should not be expected to have the flawless finish of newly manufactured clothing. Additional photographs may be requested before purchase.
Styling and Collector Appeal
This jacket offers two completely different wardrobes in one garment.
Wear the magenta-and-yellow side with black denim, wide trousers, boots or sneakers for a vivid Japanese streetwear statement. Reverse it to the ivory-and-taupe side for a quieter look that pairs naturally with indigo denim, cream trousers, earthy layers or traditional amekaji styling.
It is particularly suitable for collectors of:
- Vintage Japanese sukajan
- DENIME and Japanese casualwear
- Koi and waterfall imagery
- Crane-and-turtle symbolism
- Amekaji and Yokosuka fashion
- Reversible embroidered jackets
- Japanese tattoo-art motifs
- Wearable textile art
The unusual color architecture, extensive embroidery and contrasting reversible artwork give this piece a stronger identity than a standard souvenir bomber.
