A Real McCoy’s horsehide A-2, lined in red silk and painted across the back by Custom King with the “Tough Birds” composition, from a serialized run of only thirty. Two authorships meet in it, McCoy’s construction and Kusano’s brush, giving it a place among Japanese heritage flight jackets.
The Piece
This A-2 from The Real McCoy’s marks a rare meeting of precision reproduction and curated customization. Built in horsehide to the brand’s standard A-2 specification on a WWII USAAF silhouette and lined in red silk, it reflects the early-era commitment to material fidelity, while the large-scale “Tough Birds” back painting, a full custom by Custom King (Mr. Kusano, 草野氏), turns the garment into a narrative object. It comes from a serialized limited run of 30 pieces within the brand’s official custom program.
The nose-art-inspired back composition takes the jacket out of neutrality and makes it a wearable canvas. It shows controlled composition, a balanced color field and paint chosen to age with the leather, which separates it from aftermarket customs; edges are cleanly controlled, cracking is not excessive and adhesion remains stable, all indicating professional-level application consistent with the Custom King attribution. The decoration continues in a multi-patch configuration: an 8th Air Force insignia and a US flag patch on the shoulders, and a squadron-style patch at the chest.
Old Real McCoy’s represents a moment in Japan when reproduction became precise to the point of obsession, and collectors acquire the intent behind these jackets as much as the jackets themselves. A Custom King piece adds a second authorship layer rather than diminishing originality: the jacket carries two timelines, McCoy’s construction and Custom King’s transformation. Purists of WWII originality may hesitate; old Real McCoy’s collectors, Custom King followers, advanced Japanese reproduction enthusiasts and wearer-collectors who value narrative will recognize it.
The horsehide shows healthy grain emergence, surface tension that is still strong, and crease memory from real wear rather than artificial distressing. The red silk lining gives strong visual contrast, and its aging adds theatrical depth. The jacket dates from the late 1990s to early 2000s Japanese heritage reproduction period, with approximately thirty years of age; size 40 is wearable for most collectors and has display-friendly proportions.
