Readymade Down Jacket Cut from Vintage US Army Tent Canvas, Squadron Patches and Pin-Up Back, Khaki, Size 3

A Readymade hooded down jacket cut from washed vintage US Army tent canvas, covered in embroidered squadron patches on the front and a mermaid pin-up with the words Ready for Duty across the back.

The Piece

Readymade was founded in Tokyo by Yosuke Hosokawa on a simple, demanding rule: every garment is made from vintage material, so the fabric dictates the piece and no two are identical. Military surplus has always been the label's richest seam, and its down jackets, built from decommissioned tents and duffels, are among the pieces collectors pursue hardest because each one wears its own history.

This jacket is made from US Army tent shell, as the hand-written label inside confirms: 'down jacket, made from vintage US Army tent shell', on the Readymade reproduction label marked Made in Japan. The olive canvas carries the mottled, sun-washed fading of old tent cloth. The front is crowded with embroidered patches in the spirit of Cold War squadron insignia, including a cartoon skull, smiley faces, a jet, a globe and the Readymade R roundel, and the back carries a large circular patch of a red-haired mermaid with the slogan Ready for Duty, a nod to wartime aircraft nose art.

Inside, the jacket is lined in vivid orange nylon, a quotation of the MA-1 flight jacket, and filled with 85 per cent recycled down and 15 per cent feather. The hood is fixed, with orange drawcords, a snap storm placket and a heavy metal zip.

Size 3 is Readymade's largest regular size and is cut very generously, with dropped shoulders and a full body. It sits best over a sweatshirt or knit and will suit most wearers from a men's medium upwards who like a relaxed, oversized line.
