Dark Indigo Japanese Denim with Ivory Dokuro and Chrysanthemum Embroidery
A striking pair of SCRIPT Hanatabi Gakudan jeans, combining deep indigo workwear denim with one of the label’s most recognizable dark-romantic motifs: the 抱付髑髏, Dakitsuki Dokuro, or “embracing skull.”
Rendered in ivory-toned embroidery, skeletal faces emerge from curling chrysanthemum-like petals across the left leg and both rear pockets. The imagery feels halfway between an Edo-period ghost print, tattoo flash and the densely embroidered visual language of a sukajan jacket.
The restrained two-color palette gives these jeans unusual versatility. From a distance they appear like classic dark indigo straight-leg denim; closer inspection reveals a procession of skulls and flowers winding down one leg like a textile memento mori.
Design Character
The asymmetrical composition is the centerpiece of the design.
Three embroidered skull-and-flower motifs descend along the outer left leg, beginning near the upper thigh and continuing toward the knee. The opposite leg remains undecorated, creating a strong imbalance that feels intentional rather than crowded.
At the back, matching embroidered motifs are centered on both patch pockets. Their pale thread stands sharply against the nearly raw-looking indigo, while warm tobacco stitching and copper-tone hardware preserve the character of traditional five-pocket jeans.
The result is dramatic without becoming costume-like: unmistakably Japanese, slightly gothic and highly wearable.

Dokuro and Floral Motif
The skull, or dokuro, has long carried a layered visual presence in Japanese art. It can appear ominous, theatrical or strangely peaceful, depending on its surroundings. Here, the skulls are not presented as isolated emblems of menace. They are absorbed into flowers, petals and curling organic forms.
That pairing gives the embroidery its distinctive tension. The flowers suggest beauty, renewal and the seasonal passage of time, while the skull introduces mortality and impermanence. Together, they create an image of life and death occupying the same form.
The pale monochromatic embroidery also recalls carved bone, old ivory and faded ink drawings. Rather than using loud multicolored thread, the design depends on silhouette, texture and negative space.
Embroidery and Construction
The embroidery is substantial and dimensional, with layered satin stitching defining the flowers, skull contours, teeth and curling petal edges.
On the left leg, the motifs are positioned across multiple sections of denim without disturbing the straight silhouette. The two rear-pocket embroideries are mirrored closely enough to create symmetry from behind while retaining slight organic differences in the stitching.
Construction details include:
- Heavy cotton denim body
- One-wash indigo finish
- Regular straight-leg silhouette
- Zip-fly closure

Brand and Collector Context
Hanatabi Gakudan is the Japanese-motif label associated with Switch Planning and SCRIPT. The brand became especially recognized for sukajan jackets, but its embroidery language also extends into denim, shirts and other streetwear pieces.
Official brand materials emphasize its long-standing focus on traditional Japanese imagery, intricate embroidery and technically demanding methods such as designs that cross garment seams. More than 150 sukajan patterns have been developed under the label, giving Hanatabi Gakudan a particularly deep visual archive within modern wagara fashion.
The SP-601 carries that sukajan-derived craftsmanship into a more understated everyday garment. Compared with heavily embellished multicolored Japanese jeans, this design feels darker, cleaner and more graphic. The ivory embroidery and deep indigo ground make it especially appealing to collectors of Japanese tattoo imagery, gothic streetwear and embroidered denim.
Period Assessment
The jeans represent an earlier-style Hanatabi Gakudan production aesthetic, with a heavily textured embroidered patch, dark one-wash denim and bold but carefully contained decoration.
An exact production year is not confirmed. The design is best presented as a collectible pre-owned SCRIPT Hanatabi Gakudan SP-601 model rather than assigning it a specific vintage date.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with visible age and wear appropriate to embroidered denim.
The jeans show:
- Natural creasing from storage and previous wear
- Mild surface fading and indigo variation
- Light lint or small fibers visible against the dark denim
- Gentle wear around seams, pocket edges and waistband
- Fraying and age-related wear around the decorative rear brand patch
- Slight toning and minor thread irregularity within the ivory embroidery
- Light wear to the metal hardware
- Intact pocket and leg embroidery with strong overall definition
The dark indigo color remains rich, and the white-to-ivory embroidery continues to create excellent contrast. No major holes, large tears or severe structural damage are apparent in the photographs.
As with all pre-owned embroidered garments, small loose threads, surface marks and minor irregularities should be considered part of the item’s existing character.
Approximate Measurements
Tagged size: 36
- Waist laid flat: approximately 44 cm / 17.3 in
- Approximate waist circumference: 88 cm / 34.6 in
- Total length: approximately 109 cm / 42.9 in
- Inseam: approximately 82 cm / 32.3 in
- Front rise: approximately 28 cm / 11 in
- Thigh width laid flat: approximately 36 cm / 14.2 in
- Hem opening laid flat: approximately 23 cm / 9.1 in
Measurements are taken or assessed with the garment laid flat and may vary slightly depending on positioning.
Although tagged size 36, the photographed waist measurement is closer to a modern W34–W35. Please compare the measurements with a well-fitting pair of jeans rather than relying only on the size label.
Fit and Silhouette
The SP-601 uses a traditional regular-straight cut rather than a contemporary skinny or exaggerated wide-leg shape.
The upper block appears comfortably structured through the hips and thighs, while the legs fall relatively straight toward the hem. The approximately 23 cm flat leg opening creates a substantial workwear silhouette that pairs naturally with boots, high-top sneakers and heavier outerwear.
The shape works especially well with:
- Sukajan and souvenir jackets
- Black leather jackets
- Vintage military outerwear
- Plain heavyweight T-shirts
- Japanese biker fashion
- Rockabilly styling
- Gothic streetwear
- Work boots or engineer boots
- Minimal monochrome knitwear
Visual Presence
From the front, the left-leg embroidery creates a vertical line that visually lengthens the silhouette. The unadorned right leg acts as negative space, keeping the design balanced and preventing the imagery from becoming overwhelming.
From behind, the two embroidered pockets become the dominant feature. The pale skull-flower motifs resemble embroidered crests, giving the jeans a powerful presence even beneath a shorter jacket.
The deep indigo will also continue to develop individual fading and creasing through wear, allowing the denim surface to evolve around the fixed embroidery.
Why This Pair Stands Out
Many Japanese embroidered jeans rely on dragons, koi fish, tigers or brightly colored sakura. This pair takes a more unusual path.
The nearly monochrome skull-and-chrysanthemum imagery feels restrained, macabre and elegant at once. It offers the visual richness associated with Japanese souvenir clothing without requiring the wearer to build an entire outfit around loud color.
Collector interest is strengthened by:
- Identifiable SP-601 model
- Recognized SCRIPT Hanatabi Gakudan branding
- Dakitsuki Dokuro design
- Substantial multi-position embroidery
- Desirable larger tagged size 36
- Deep indigo one-wash denim
- Regular straight silhouette
- Strong crossover between wagara, biker and gothic fashion
- Matching pocket and leg motifs
- Characterful aged brand patch
