The Piece
This Prince Shokai sukajan carries floral designs drawn from Japanese tattoo art, embroidered in yokoburi, the traditional technique in which the embroiderer guides fabric by hand beneath a swing-needle machine to build up dense, painterly thread. Worked on velvet velour, a pile surface that absorbs light and makes embroidery appear especially saturated, the flowers bring the vocabulary of irezumi to the reversible bomber form of the Yokosuka jumper.
