Examico #4001 Friction-Driven Racing Automobile
Germany, pre-war period (circa 1936–1939)
Painted tinplate with friction motor, steering linkage, and stepped transmission mechanism
This object represents an exceptionally rare original pre-war German tin racing automobile, identified as an Examico four-speed variation model #4001, a configuration seldom encountered in complete or intelligible form. The design is understood to be modeled after the BMW 328, one of the most iconic German racing cars of the late interwar period, and reflects the streamlined aesthetic and mechanical ambition characteristic of late-1930s continental tin production.
Constructed from pressed and painted tinplate, the car incorporates a friction-driven motor that remains active and unusually strong for its age. A defining feature of this model is its multi-stage transmission system, allowing for stepped speed variation—an advanced and technically ambitious mechanism for the period. While it is difficult to verify that all four speeds engage with strict mechanical precision, the transformation mechanism itself remains operative and clearly demonstrative of its intended complexity.
The steering wheel is mechanically linked to the front axle, allowing directional control, and the vehicle’s proportions—approximately 14.5 cm in length, 6 cm in width, and weighing 171 g—place it firmly within the premium category of pre-war European tin automobiles. The underside bears the critical “MADE IN GERMANY” marking, confirming manufacture prior to postwar geopolitical reclassification (later examples bearing U.S. Zone or Western Germany marks).
Condition is consistent with an authentic survivor. The painted surface shows scattered small scratches, abrasions, and localized wear appropriate to age and handling, but no major structural damage. A notable historical intervention is the replacement of the missing front windshield, carefully fabricated from celluloid sheet to restore visual integrity while remaining clearly disclosed as a later addition. Importantly, the key—while present—is not original.
Overall, this example should be understood not as a pristine toy, but as a museum-grade mechanical artifact, retaining its essential form, function, and historical clarity.
🧭 CURATORIAL PLACEMENT
Pre-War European Engineering & Speed
Pre-War Subsection: Continental Racing Forms & Mechanical Experimentation
Narrative roles:
-
Civilian speed culture under interwar nationalism
-
Early toy-scale transmission and motion engineering
-
Streamlined automotive modernism before WWII
-
Mechanical ambition exceeding play necessity
Pairs effectively with:
-
Pre-war German and French racing tin automobiles
-
Examico, Schuco, Tipp & Co., and Distler references
-
BMW 328 ephemera and motorsport iconography
-
Friction and clockwork hybrid motion toys
This object functions as a keystone reference piece for collectors studying the escalation of mechanical sophistication in pre-war European tin toys. Its stepped transmission, steering linkage, and friction system position it beyond novelty and firmly within experimental industrial play, where toys mirrored national engineering confidence and automotive aspiration.
As such, it serves not merely as a collectible, but as a technical document in tin, marking the transition from simple motion toys toward complex mechanical simulation—an evolution abruptly halted by the onset of war.
