🧠 LOT ENTRY

Twin-Axle Tin Artillery Cannon (Spring-Assisted Field Gun)
Japan, pre-war period (circa late 1920s–1930s)
Painted tinplate, hand-wound spring mechanism, twin-axle wheeled carriage

This pre-war Japanese tin field artillery cannon represents a mature stage of military-form toy production, distinguished by its twin-axle carriage, long barrel profile, and mechanically animated firing action. Unlike simplified novelty cannons, this example closely follows real artillery silhouettes of the early twentieth century, emphasizing mass, balance, and ground presence.

The cannon is mounted on a two-axle wheeled carriage, an advanced structural choice rarely seen in toy artillery due to added material cost and assembly complexity. Motion is produced via a hand-wound spring mechanism, allowing the cannon to articulate and animate rather than merely sit as a static model. Such mechanisms were commonly stressed in play and are frequently compromised or lost; survival of the core system is a key positive indicator.

Artillery toys of this scale were produced in significantly lower numbers than tanks or wheeled vehicles. Their perceived severity, combined with mechanical complexity, resulted in high attrition rates. As a result, surviving examples—particularly those retaining wheels, carriage alignment, and barrel integrity—are increasingly scarce.

This piece should be understood not as a functional firing toy, but as a structural and display survivor, valued for form, scale, and authenticity rather than operation.

🧭 CURATORIAL PLACEMENT

Postwar Hope & Motion

Pre-War Subsection: Artillery, Weight & Industrial Authority

Narrative roles:

  • Military form without speed

  • Weight and scale as visual power

  • Static authority versus kinetic toys

  • Industrial realism over fantasy

Pairs effectively with:

  • Tin tanks and armored cars

  • Soldier figures and battlefield dioramas

  • Other wheeled artillery and cannon forms

This object functions as a counterweight piece within a military toy narrative—anchoring the collection through mass, restraint, and structural realism.
