🧠 LOT ENTRY

Kewpie Lithographed Tin Spinning Tops (Pair)
Japan, pre-war to early post-war transitional period (late 1920s–1940s)
Lithographed tinplate, hand-spun rotational toys

This matched pair of Japanese tin spinning tops features brightly lithographed Kewpie character imagery, one depicting a playful nude Kewpie amid botanical motifs, the other incorporating a more narrative illustrated scene. Produced during the interwar to immediate postwar transition, these tops exemplify the continued popularity of Kewpie iconography in Japanese children’s goods, adapted into simple, durable play forms.

Unlike clockwork or push-operated toys, tin spinning tops relied on direct human interaction—a quick twist imparting motion—making them among the most accessible and widely distributed tin toys of their era. Their appeal lies not in mechanical complexity, but in graphic immediacy, color saturation, and rotational illusion, as the lithography animates while spinning.

The survival of two examples together is notable. Spinning tops were inexpensive, heavily used, and frequently discarded, resulting in high attrition rates. These examples retain strong lithographic clarity, intact rims, and functional spin capability, marking them as unusually well-preserved survivors within their category.

They should be appreciated as graphic artifacts of mass childhood culture, rather than as isolated novelty objects.
