Bright yellow and cartoon-bold: a short sleeveless Pleats Please dress decorated with oversized desk objects, from a pencil and an eraser to a lipstick-red mouth and a paper plane.
The Piece
The stationery prints belong to the Pleats Please tradition of turning ordinary objects into graphic pop. Thick black outlines and flat colour give the pieces the feel of a comic strip, and the scale is generous, so each motif wraps around the body rather than repeating in small rows. The style code suggests around 2012.
This is the short tank version, with a wide scoop neck, narrow shoulders and a straight body that ends above the knee. A grey shoulder band, a teal ring, blue and violet shapes and a red panel with a white cloud of graphic shapes punctuate the golden yellow ground.
It works on its own in summer and over a fine black roll-neck and opaque tights in winter, which is how many Japanese collectors wear their short Pleats Please pieces.
