A Pleats Please high-neck tunic dress washed in blurred horizontal bands of coral, sulphur yellow, violet, lime and mint, like a sunset seen through frosted glass.

The Piece

Pleats Please Issey Miyake was introduced in 1993 out of the garment-pleating research Miyake and his studio had pursued since the late 1980s. Instead of pleating cloth and then cutting it, each piece is cut and sewn two and a half to three times larger than its finished size and then fed, sandwiched between paper, through a heat press, so the pleats are set into the finished garment itself. The result is light, packable, washable and practically uncreasable, and it changed how a generation of women thought about dressing well.

Model PP23-JT736 is a long-sleeved tunic with a stand-up funnel neck and an A-line body that falls to the upper thigh or knee depending on height. The print is a series of soft-edged horizontal stripes, black melting into coral, sulphur yellow, violet, lime and finally mint at the hem, and the sleeves fade from violet to acid green. Side vents at the hem let the body move.

It is one of the label's more recent graphic prints, and it works as a mini dress with bare legs or as a long top over slim black trousers, where the colour does all the talking.

Size 3 is the largest regular size, with a generous, easy fit through the body.
