This Muromachi-period wooden sculpture depicts Amida Nyorai seated in meditative posture upon a lotus base and framed by a carved mandorla. Traces of gilding and polychromy remain across the surface, lending warmth and historical depth to the figure.

Amida Nyorai occupies a central role in Pure Land Buddhism, symbolizing boundless compassion and the promise of rebirth in the Pure Land. Sculptures of this scale were intended as devotional focal points within temple interiors or significant ritual spaces.

Wear, patina, and surface losses are consistent with age and prolonged devotional use, affirming authenticity as a historic religious sculpture.

Who is this deity?

Amida Nyorai is the Buddha of Infinite Light, revered in Pure Land tradition as a guide toward enlightenment and compassionate salvation.
