A hybrid creature, part jellyfish and part cartoon spirit, floats above a field of multicolor flowers in this 2003 offset lithograph from Murakami's foundational Superflat years. Limited to 300 and published by Kaikai Kiki, it is framed behind glass and remains in very good condition for its age.
The Piece
Jellyfish captures Murakami's early 2000s imagination: hypnotic eyes, candy-colored spirals and a smiling floral ecosystem in a playful yet uncanny visual language from the period that shaped his global ascent. Swirling details, gradient tones and a checkerboard silver background recall his idea of flatness as cultural memory, where otaku aesthetics, pop energy and fine-art tradition collapse into one surface.
Created while Kaikai Kiki was still developing its signature production system, the edition of 300 is an important historical document, and early prints from the 2000–2005 era have become increasingly rare, especially those preserved with clarity and minimal wear. The work bridges the innocence of early Superflat with the surrealism that would later define the studio, and the artist's reflective surface catches the light behind the glazing.
Takashi Murakami, founder of Kaikai Kiki, merged high art with Japanese pop culture; his early 2000s Superflat works defined a new aesthetic movement and set the stage for collaborations with Louis Vuitton, Pharrell and major museums.
