This commanding bronze sculpture depicts Kannon Bosatsu standing serenely atop a coiled dragon, a rare and symbolically dense composition within Japanese Buddhist metalwork. Cast at monumental tabletop scale, the figure integrates devotional iconography with sculptural dynamism characteristic of late Meiji-period religious art.

Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is rendered with elongated proportions and calm expression, embodying mercy and spiritual guidance. The dragon beneath—muscular, animated, and richly textured—functions as both cosmic vehicle and guardian force, symbolizing wisdom, protection, and the subjugation of chaos through enlightenment.

Such dragon-supported Kannon figures are associated with esoteric Buddhist imagery and were often commissioned for temple halls or private devotional altars during the Meiji era, when Buddhist workshops sought to preserve sacred traditions amid sweeping modernization.

The bronze surface displays a deep, luminous patina, highlighting crisp detail in the dragon’s scales and the flowing robes of the deity. The presence of an incised signature confirms workshop authorship and elevates the piece beyond anonymous devotional casting.

Condition shows age-consistent wear with no evidence of modern reproduction, reinforcing authenticity and historical continuity.
