Tetsuwan Atom, the boy robot known abroad as Astro Boy, rides here in a Masudaya tin racing speed car issued under Tezuka Osamu Productions. It joins two pillars of postwar Japan, Osamu Tezuka's founding manga hero and the tin-toy industry that carried such characters into homes around the world.
The Piece
This vintage Japanese tin toy by Masudaya takes the form of a racing speed car themed to Tetsuwan Atom, produced under the Tezuka Osamu Productions name. Created by Osamu Tezuka, Tetsuwan Atom became one of the first great heroes of Japanese manga and television animation, and character vehicles like this one translated his image of benevolent science into objects of everyday play.
