From Louis Vuitton's original collaboration with Yayoi Kusama, this Neverfull MM M40684 sends ivory-white dots in sweeping, hypnotic waves across the house's brown Monogram canvas. Dots of dramatically changing scale turn one of the maison's most practical silhouettes into something closer to an optical artwork.
The Piece
Rather than covering the bag with a uniform polka-dot repeat, the design uses dots of dramatically changing scale. Tiny points gather into dense bands before expanding into larger circular forms, creating a sense of movement across the entire tote. Sections of untouched Monogram canvas, with their LV initials, quatrefoils and flowers, remain exposed between the waves, so the traditional Louis Vuitton pattern and Kusama's obsessive dot language coexist on the same surface. The changing scale of the circles lends the flat coated canvas an almost topographical depth.
Founded in Paris in 1854, Louis Vuitton built its reputation on travel trunks, durable coated surfaces and precisely constructed luggage, and its Monogram canvas became one of the most recognizable signatures in luxury design. Artist collaborations allowed artists to intervene directly in that visual system rather than merely decorate existing products. Kusama's partnership is especially distinctive because repetition, accumulation and the dot have been central to her work for decades; here her vocabulary meets the house's repeating Monogram, two different systems of repetition within one object. The Monogram relies on regular spacing and controlled geometry, while the Kusama overlay is fluid and organic, compressing into narrow streams, expanding into circular clusters and dissolving back into exposed canvas.
The palette is restrained: brown Monogram canvas, ivory-white dotted wave graphics, natural tan leather trim and gold-tone hardware, with no bright rainbow tones competing for attention. The drama comes almost entirely from scale, rhythm and pattern. From a distance the bag has a strong black-brown-and-white graphic presence; up close the individual dots and underlying LV motifs come forward, giving it considerably more visual complexity than a standard printed Neverfull. Natural leather handles, side ties and trim introduce the warm caramel tones of classic Louis Vuitton travel pieces.
Inside, instead of the familiar plain textile of many standard Neverfull editions, the lining continues Kusama's dot language in an all-over dotted treatment, so opening the tote becomes part of the visual experience. The classic open Neverfull structure is retained, with a suspended zippered pocket for smaller valuables and accessories. Twin leather shoulder handles carry the bag, and adjustable leather side ties draw the profile inward or leave it open for maximum capacity. The broad interior accommodates everyday essentials, tablets, documents, cosmetics, small clothing items and travel accessories, and the MM format offers substantial capacity while remaining noticeably easier to manage than the larger GM.
The M40684 holds a particular place in Louis Vuitton collaboration collecting. Unlike later artist editions that lean on character graphics or isolated motifs, the Monogram Waves Neverfull transforms nearly the entire surface through pattern, recognizable without branding beyond the Monogram beneath. Its appeal spans Monogram and Neverfull collectors, collectors of Japanese contemporary art and of Kusama, artist-collaboration collectors and those focused on early twenty-first-century luxury fashion. The neutral palette makes it surprisingly versatile with black tailoring, cream knitwear, white shirts, brown leather, denim, monochrome dresses and understated outerwear, an appealing middle ground for those who want a collaboration piece without extremely bright color.
