The collaboration that first let an artist write across the Monogram. This Speedy 30 M92194 belongs to the original 2001 Louis Vuitton × Stephen Sprouse program, its khaki graffiti sweeping over brown Monogram canvas, and its date code places it in April 2001.
The Piece
Under Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton allowed the New York designer and artist Stephen Sprouse to sweep his expressive graffiti lettering directly across the Maison's historic Monogram. Jacobs had taken over ready-to-wear in the late 1990s and treated heritage as a vocabulary to reinterpret; period reporting records that he conceived the project and wanted Sprouse himself to execute the graffiti rather than imitate his style. Contemporary coverage described waiting lists forming before the bags reached stores, and the Maison's later corporate history notes that the 2001 pieces sold out within weeks.
Sprouse stood between New York fashion, art, music and underground culture, combining punk energy, handwritten typography, Day-Glo color, street graphics and high-fashion construction. His lettering refuses the Monogram grid: words cross LV initials, cover flowers, move across panel boundaries, change orientation and reappear around the sides. The Monogram remains visible underneath, its authority interrupted. Instead of hiding Louis Vuitton, he wrote its name repeatedly across its own pattern, at once irreverent and intensely branded.
On the M92194 the graffiti is a muted khaki, a military-olive tone rather than the fluorescent colors of later reinterpretations. Against the brown canvas the two palettes partly merge, so that from a distance the bag looks almost camouflaged; up close, large handwritten forms spelling Louis Vuitton and Paris emerge as the artwork wraps around the body. Disruptive in scale and restrained in color, it remains one of the Maison's most recognizable artist collaborations more than two decades on.
Beneath the artwork is the classic Speedy 30, Louis Vuitton's quintessential soft travel form: rounded twin handles, a softly structured rectangular body in Monogram coated canvas, natural cowhide trim and handle mounts, a top zip, gold-tone hardware and compact Boston-bag proportions. It is a hand-carried Speedy, without the later Bandoulière strap, and the wide zip opens onto a generous central compartment with one open pocket. The untreated cowhide deepens to honey and amber with light, handling and time, a patina that on early-2000s examples becomes part of the chronology.

Sprouse Chronology
Two Sprouse Graffiti periods must be distinguished. In 2001 Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Stephen Sprouse created the original collaboration; in 2009, after the artist's death, Jacobs revisited Sprouse's imagery in a tribute collection of vivid Graffiti and Roses designs. The M92194 belongs to the first chapter.
Graffiti alone does not establish the era, since the imagery returned in later collections; the whole construction must agree. Here the muted khaki color, the early date code and original-period construction separate the bag from the later neon editions. The 2001 project predates the Takashi Murakami Multicolore era, the Louis Vuitton × Supreme project and today's widespread luxury collaboration model.
