The Lightning 391T rider made by Lewis Leathers in London for Comme des Garçons in 2023, pieced from cowhide and horsehide panels and lined in Comme des Garçons red quilting.
The Piece
Lewis Leathers has cut motorcycle jackets in London since 1892, and the Lightning, first made in the 1950s, is the house's defining shape: short, close in the body, with an asymmetric front zip and belted waist. Rei Kawakubo's Comme des Garçons has returned to the Lightning repeatedly, commissioning small runs that are made in England by Lewis Leathers and finished with Comme des Garçons details.
This example, product code KZ-J016 and dated AD2023, is the 391T Lightning in black, built as a patchwork: the body is cowhide, while the front panels are cut separately in horsehide, giving a subtle change of grain and sheen across the chest. It has the full Lightning hardware, with angled zip pockets, zipped cuffs, snap-down lapels, epaulettes and buckled waist adjusters. Inside, the bright red quilted lining carries the navy COMME des GARÇONS label above the Aviakit trade mark, Made in England, with the original Lewis Leathers tag dated 8-6-23 still attached.
Tagged 42, it measures 46 cm across the shoulders and 55 cm pit to pit, and wears true to a slim men's medium. The lining is padded, so it is a proper cold-weather jacket.
The leather is supple and already softening into the body, the way a good Lightning should.

Condition
- Graded A overall.
- Light soiling at the inside of the collar and near the hem.
- A crease mark on the left front panel, shown in the photographs.
- Zips, snaps and buckles all in working order; lining clean.
