Introduction

A commanding large-format Japanese devotional sculpture depicting Kannon Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, standing serenely upon a naturalistic rock-form pedestal.

At approximately 55 cm / 21.7 inches tall, the figure has considerably more visual presence than the smaller altar bronzes commonly encountered. The composition is slender and vertical, with long cascading robes, a high sacred headdress and a calm frontal expression. A short cylindrical attribute is held horizontally in one hand, while the opposite arm follows the graceful fall of the robe.

The nearly black surface gives the sculpture an unusually restrained character. Rather than depending upon bright gilding or elaborate polychromy, the figure is defined through silhouette, modeling and controlled highlights across the face and drapery.

It is equally compelling as a Buddhist devotional object, Japanese art sculpture or dramatic architectural accent.

Kannon Bosatsu

Kannon is the Japanese manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva associated with compassion and the compassionate response to suffering.

Japanese representations of Kannon range from highly elaborate multi-armed manifestations to serene single-faced, two-armed figures such as the present sculpture.
