Introduction
A dramatic matched pair of large Japanese carved wooden figures depicting Fujin and Raijin, the legendary gods of wind and thunder, rendered with muscular bodies, animated expressions and remarkable sculptural movement.
Each figure stands approximately 41 cm tall, giving the pair substantial visual presence while remaining practical for interior display. Fujin carries his enormous wind bag across his shoulders, while Raijin raises his implements overhead in an energetic manifestation of thunder. Together they form one of the most recognizable protective pairings in Japanese religious and decorative art.
The warm natural wood has been left largely exposed, allowing the flowing grain to become part of the sculpture itself. From the sharply modeled musculature to the curling scarves, expressive faces and carved cloud-like bases, the figures reward viewing from every side.
An inscribed wooden storage box accompanies the pair, adding an especially appealing provenance element to the set.
Fujin, God of Wind
Fujin is immediately recognizable by the enormous bag carried across his shoulders.
Within Japanese visual tradition, this bag contains the winds. The sculptor has transformed it into a sweeping arc around the figure, creating a powerful compositional frame around Fujin's head and upper body.
His kneeling posture feels momentarily suspended rather than static. One foot presses firmly into the base while the torso seems ready to surge forward, conveying the invisible force of moving air through carved wood.
The strongly modeled abdomen, hands and face contrast beautifully with the flowing cloth wrapped around his body.
Raijin, God of Thunder
Beside Fujin stands Raijin, depicted with wild upward-sweeping hair and raised thunder implements.
His body is similarly muscular, but the energy is different. Where Fujin bends beneath the weight and movement of his great wind bag, Raijin rises vertically, arms lifted as though preparing to unleash a tremendous crash of thunder.
The sculptor has given him an expressive, almost theatrical face, lending the pair both formidable presence and a distinctly human sense of character.
Wind and Thunder Together
Fujin and Raijin are traditionally understood as complementary forces.
Wind and thunder arrive together within the drama of a storm, and Japanese artists have paired these figures for centuries. Their imagery became deeply embedded in Buddhist temple culture as well as broader Japanese visual tradition.
Rather than peaceful contemplative deities, they represent nature in motion: unpredictable, powerful and worthy of respect.
Displayed as a pair, their opposing gestures produce a particularly effective composition. Fujin's great curved bag sweeps horizontally while Raijin's arms and hair rise upward, creating a balance of movement across the two sculptures.

The figures have been carved from pale warm-toned wood with prominent grain running through their bodies, robes, bases and attributes. This creates constantly changing patterns across the surface when viewed from different angles.

They have enough scale to command a console, large cabinet, tokonoma-inspired setting, study or collector's room without entering the difficult shipping and installation territory of monumental temple sculpture.
Placed several centimeters apart, they create an imposing symmetrical display. Seen individually, each remains a complete sculpture in its own right.
Inscribed Wooden Storage Box
The accompanying wooden storage box bears handwritten Japanese calligraphy.
The presence of an inscribed box adds another layer of historical character and suggests that the pair was considered worthy of deliberate storage and preservation rather than being treated simply as ordinary household decoration.
The inscription includes a visible Showa-era notation and additional handwritten information associated with the object or its history.
