Seated in royal ease above curling waves and rockwork, this Chinese Guanyin stands about 63 cm tall, with aged gilding glowing through a deep brown-black patina. Serenity in the face meets movement below, where robes, lotus forms and rolling water become an almost landscape-like pedestal in the lyrical Water-Moon tradition.
The Piece
The figure is identifiable as Guanyin, the Chinese manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, Bodhisattva of Compassion. Particularly important is the small seated Buddha within the high coiffure, a reference to Amitabha that strongly supports the identification.
Stylistically the sculpture belongs to the tradition of Water-Moon Guanyin, one of the most lyrical manifestations of Avalokiteshvara in Chinese Buddhist art. Rather than sitting in rigid meditation, Guanyin assumes the relaxed, contemplative pose known as royal ease; historical Water-Moon images often show the deity seated informally on rockwork, one leg raised or bent while the other descends, in quiet contemplation beside water. The Cleveland Museum of Art describes the tradition through precisely this combination of royal-ease posture, flowing garments and naturalistic setting. Here the rolling forms beneath the figure take part in the image, turning the sculpture into a miniature sacred landscape.
Unlike the severe frontality of many altar icons, this Guanyin has an almost human stillness. Downcast eyes, elongated earlobes and a restrained expression create a contemplative presence, while jewelry and an elaborate coiffure keep the traditional distinction between a richly adorned bodhisattva and a monastically dressed Buddha. The posture is asymmetrical but balanced: one hand extends outward in an open gesture while the other rests beside the body, less a formal throne image than a moment of compassionate observation.
Warm gold survives across the face, shoulders, torso, limbs, garments and base, emerging irregularly through the darker patinated ground, so that light seems to appear and disappear as the sculpture is viewed from different angles. Fragmented and softened by time, this layered surface is the kind most valued in historical and vintage Asian sculpture, and the photographs reward close study.
A comparable large bronze Guanyin of approximately 60.6 cm, also bearing a Qianlong mark and seated on rockwork with waves and traces of gilding, has been catalogued by Waddington's as a massive bronze Guanyin; its close scale and iconography show that this type belongs to an established Chinese sculptural tradition rather than to generic decorative figures. At nearly 25 inches, with a relatively narrow depth, the piece suits an altar table, console, architectural shelf or substantial pedestal. Against a dark interior the gilding turns almost ember-like; against a pale minimalist ground the silhouette and modeling come forward. It sits naturally within Buddhist, classical Asian, wabi-sabi, eclectic and contemporary interiors.

Reign Mark Notes
Museums caution that a Qianlong mark must be weighed together with material, casting, construction, workmanship, patina and provenance rather than treated as a date certificate. No claim is made that the mark establishes an eighteenth-century date, and collectors seeking a definitive dynasty attribution are encouraged to undertake independent specialist examination.
Authenticity & Care
The six-character mark follows the traditional Qing reign-mark convention but is not proof of manufacture during the Qianlong reign (1736 to 1795), as later pieces often carry retrospective or apocryphal marks; the sculpture is offered conservatively as a Chinese gilt-bronze Guanyin bearing a Qianlong-style mark, with attribution based on visible characteristics rather than documented provenance. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
