This Kutani shishi pair represents a high-impact example of regional Japanese ceramic guardian figures, produced at a scale and weight rarely encountered outside of temple-adjacent or formal interior settings. Unlike small shelf shishi, these are monumental domestic guardians, designed to command space visually and symbolically.
Each figure presents a complementary stance: one with open mouth, one with closed mouth, a traditional pairing symbolizing the beginning and end of all things. The bodies are powerfully modeled, with deep carving across the mane, chest, and haunches, while the polychrome overglaze introduces layered blues, creams, gold accents, and iron-toned details. The glaze pooling and tonal variation suggest deliberate kiln and brush control rather than factory uniformity.
The underside weight and thickness indicate serious ceramic mass, not lightweight decorative ware. This places the pair closer to architectural or altar-adjacent objects than casual ornaments.
REGIONAL & MATERIAL CONTEXT — KUTANI
Kutani ware is historically associated with bold color palettes, high-relief decoration, and assertive visual presence. While often discussed in the context of vessels and plates, Kutani sculptural output—especially shishi—is less frequently preserved in matched pairs of this size.
Shishi figures served dual roles: symbolic protectors and declarations of refinement. In domestic interiors, they communicated cultural literacy, prosperity, and a protective threshold between the inner and outer world.
FORM, SCALE & PHYSICAL PRESENCE
-
Height: approx. 28 cm
-
Width: approx. 24 cm
-
Depth: approx. 20 cm
-
Weight: approx. 2.85 – 3.45 kg per figure
At this size and mass, these are floor-capable or low-plinth sculptures, not shelf novelties. When staged properly, they read as architectural accents.
CONDITION OVERVIEW
The pair presents with light surface wear consistent with age and ceramic handling. No major losses or destabilizing cracks observed. Glaze remains vivid with attractive patina rather than degradation. Minor wear enhances authenticity rather than detracting from display value.
