Two monumental carp, one in silver-white thread and one in antique gold, rise through foaming waves beneath clouds of cherry blossom on black rayon satin. Koto Koto's KTJK-023 treats the whole garment as a single textile canvas, with a quiet black-and-champagne reverse for days when the spectacle can rest.
The Piece
This reversible souvenir jacket is built around one of the most enduring symbols in East Asian visual culture, nishikigoi rising through turbulent water beneath pink cherry blossom. It corresponds to Koto Koto model KTJK-023, officially titled the Nishikigoi × Sakura Embroidered Reversible Sukajan (錦鯉 × 桜 柄 刺繍 リバーシブル スカジャン) in the Black × Silver colorway, an original Koto Koto design rather than a reproduction of a specific historic military jacket. Its principal face is a living tattoo composition in thread; its reverse is dark, minimal and quietly luxurious.
The first impression is scale. On the back the silver koi rises from the lower left, broad tail and sweeping fins opening across the black satin, while the golden koi moves upward from the opposite direction, crossing the first amid waves and falling petals in a circular energy, as though the fish were turning around one another in deep water. The front continues the scene rather than repeating it: both koi reappear at monumental scale, divided by the zipper and made whole when the jacket is closed, with blossoms around their faces and white foam curling up from the hem. The silver koi carries large overlapping scales, black internal outlines, sweeping pectoral fins, a broad white tail, sculptural head detailing and a calm, determined expression, almost moonlit against the black; the gold koi shows layered metallic-looking scales, white fin highlights, curved dorsal detailing, dark contour stitching and a powerful upward posture. Each has its own rhythm, two complementary forces in the same current.
Dense clusters of sakura in pale pink, blush, white and coral pink, with soft yellow centers and green leaves and stems, surround the fish front and back; some fully open, others as buds, partial blossoms or single falling petals drifting across the satin, so the work never feels mechanically repeated. Flowering branches with buds, petals and fine stems in pink and cream shading run inside the black lengthwise stripes of the champagne sleeves from shoulder to cuff, so the blossoms seem to spread outward from the koi when the arms are extended; Koto Koto's own description singles out this sleeve continuity, one of the strongest details confirming the model. Below, stylized white and silver waves of curling foam, hooked crests, layered current lines, splash marks and rounded cloudlike forms echo ukiyo-e and traditional textile design without copying any single print. Large filled areas form the koi bodies, while fine linear stitches define scales, fin rays, facial contours, petals, leaf veins, foam, branches and water.
Koi are deeply associated with perseverance, courage, ambition, endurance, transformation, advancement and success earned through effort; in Japanese tattoo and decorative traditions the rising koi is a creature still moving toward transformation, powerful because its journey is unfinished. The pairing of gold and silver lends a ceremonial quality, open to readings of sun and moon, warmth and coolness, prosperity and clarity, or two paths through one world. Cherry blossoms add renewal, beauty and impermanence, and the waves stand for the changing world through which the koi passes, succeeding not by defeating the water but by learning to move through it.
The sukajan developed from souvenir jackets produced in Japan for members of the Allied forces in the postwar period, beginning in the late 1940s and becoming especially established in the 1950s, before moving into youth culture, motorcycle fashion, rockabilly, amekaji, music and luxury streetwear. Modern wagara labels widened the visual language with Buddhism, folklore, tattoo traditions, ukiyo-e and seasonal nature. Koto Koto presents Japanese wagara garments through highly detailed original designs developed with specialist artists and retailers, and this jacket belongs to that modern continuation, keeping the reversible satin structure and embroidered storytelling of the classic sukajan while giving koi and sakura contemporary scale and density.

Condition
- Good pre-owned condition; the jacket presents strongly, with the silver and gold koi, pink blossoms, green leaves and pale waves vivid and well defined.
- Visible characteristics include natural wrinkling and creasing throughout the rayon satin, mild surface variation from the fabric and reflected light, light handling or storage impressions, possible minor marks on the pale champagne sleeves, gentle age-related wear at cuffs, waistband and collar, minor embroidery thread ends or small irregularities, light rubbing around the zipper and pocket openings, subtle tonal variation across the black satin, and possible faint signs of previous wear not captured in every photograph.
- No obvious major holes, large tears or extensive embroidery loss are visible; the zipper, ribbed trim and major embroidered areas appear present and structurally intact.
- Rayon satin is delicate: small thread pulls, surface lines and slight irregularities may show more under bright directional light, and the black may read as charcoal, blue-black or graphite and the champagne as silver, pale gold, ivory or beige depending on the light. The photographs form an essential part of the condition record.
Fit Guidance
Size and exact flat measurements are still to be added: chest width pit to pit, body length, sleeve reach from center back neck, hem width, upper-arm width and cuff opening. Japanese sukajan typically have raglan shoulders, a shorter body, rounded bomber proportions, comfortable chest room and a tapered ribbed hem, with sleeves measured from the center rear collar, so fit is best judged against a jacket you already own rather than a letter size.
Display Notes
Shown with the embroidered face outward, the black body acts as a dark gallery ground for the silver, gold and pink thread; the composition reads from a distance, while close inspection reveals individual scales, layered fin stitching, flower centers, leaf shading and foam curls. Extend the sleeves slightly so the continuing sakura remains visible.
