A mounted warrior in full armor rides through a storm of cherry blossoms on the vivid red satin of this sukajan, crowned by gold kanji reading 傾奇者, kabukimono. On the front, a skull, crossed swords and a line of calligraphy give the Warring States legend a punk-rock edge.
The Piece
Kabukimono were remembered as bold, unconventional warrior-outsiders whose extravagant appearance and rebellious behavior challenged social expectations. The back shows one of them: an armored warrior with an imposing helmet and long spear on a black horse, rendered in black, silver, burgundy and gold, enclosed within a circular field of embroidered flowers, branches and birds, with gold botanical scrollwork and weapon motifs, the richness of a decorative screen or tattoo back-piece. Pale pink blossoms soften the dark armor against the brilliant red ground.
The front sets an embroidered skull and crossed Japanese swords among cascading cherry blossoms and petals, with gold and white thread accents and a vertical line of calligraphy, 天に愛されし 戦国一の 極傾奇, which may be read as 'Loved by heaven, the greatest kabukimono of the Warring States.' The wording strongly evokes Maeda Keiji, celebrated in popular culture as the supreme kabukimono. The skull adds a memento mori note, the swords readiness and resolve, the sakura the fleeting nature of life.
The black raglan sleeves are asymmetric: one carries flowering sakura branches in pink, ivory and muted green, the other long red cords ending in embroidered metal-like arrow- or spearhead forms. Two zippered front pockets with decorative metal pulls, a full front zipper, striped rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband and a patterned interior lining complete the classic souvenir-bomber silhouette in red, black, silver and gold.
