A biker jacket by Junya Watanabe exploded into wing-like panels and long ribbon strips of glossy black faux leather, from the Spring/Summer 2024 collection.
The Piece
Junya Watanabe's Spring/Summer 2024 women's collection took the black biker jacket and pulled it apart into three-dimensional forms, with panels folding out from the body like wings and petals. It was one of the most graphic shows of recent seasons, and the jackets from it are true wearable sculpture.
At the centre is a recognisable rider: an asymmetric zip, snap-studded lapel, buckled belt with large silver buckle and a fitted, seamed body. From there, great curved panels of glossy black synthetic leather extend from the shoulders and sides, falling in points and cascading into narrow ribbon strips that hang below the hem. The back is shaped with angular seams that pick up the same movement. Inside, a black jersey body lining keeps the structure close to the body.
Product code JM-J013, dated AD2023 on the care label, which places it in Spring/Summer 2024. The shell is 100% synthetic leather (polyurethane resin) with a 100% polyester lining, size S, made in Japan by Comme des Garçons.
The bodice is cut close, while the panels stand away and move as you do. Measured flat, the shoulder is about 35 cm, the body length about 60 cm and the longest point about 92 cm. Wear it over black: a slim knit, a slip dress or tailored trousers.
