Junya Watanabe MAN x Karrimor AW2017 Reversible Mountain Parka, Backpack Side and Beige Side, Size XS

The collaboration that made Karrimor rucksacks into outerwear: a Junya Watanabe MAN reversible mountain parka with a full Intrepid backpack built into one face and a clean beige hooded parka on the other.

The Piece

Junya Watanabe MAN's work with Karrimor is among the most celebrated partnerships in his catalogue. Beginning around Autumn/Winter 2017, Watanabe took apart real Karrimor packs and stitched their panels, straps and hardware onto jackets, producing pieces that are part garment, part equipment. Collectors still treat the early backpack jackets as the defining images of the collaboration.

This parka, model WA-J101 with an AD2017 care label, is reversible. One face is the navy and grey backpack side: a hooded shell overlaid with chest pockets, buckled straps, a Karrimor logo on the sleeve, and on the back an Intrepid 40 pack front complete with compression straps and buckles. Turn it inside out and it becomes a quiet sand-beige hooded parka in a cotton and polyester weave, with a Karrimor logo print on the chest, corduroy accents and a tan leather pull at the collar.

The cut is compact and slightly cropped, with raglan sleeves that allow movement whichever side faces out. The backpack face is the conversation piece; the beige face is the everyday coat for days when the gear needs to stay quiet.

Few collaborations translate so literally from the trail to the street, which is why these parkas remain sought after by both Junya collectors and outdoor-gear enthusiasts.
