Japanese Gilded Porcelain Vase, Deep Cobalt Floral Over Gold Ground, Ovoid Cabinet Piece, 24.5 cm

A small vase with the presence of a much larger one: gold saturates every surface of this Japanese porcelain ovoid, and cobalt flowers bloom across it in crisp, layered enamel. At 24.5 cm it is made for the cabinet or a single shelf, where direct light turns the blue and gold jewel-bright.

The Piece

This Japanese porcelain vase has a compressed, ovoid silhouette designed to concentrate visual density. The entire surface is saturated with gold-ground patterning, creating a luminous base that signals formality and value, and against it deep cobalt-blue floral forms emerge with controlled edges and subtle tonal variation. Despite its compact scale, the vase reads as a complete decorative statement rather than a supporting accent.

Gold-ground decoration in Japanese porcelain is traditionally associated with celebration, prestige and auspicious display, and the blue floral motifs bring balance and restraint, keeping the surface from becoming overwhelming. The pairing of blue and gold emphasizes clarity, refinement and intentional contrast rather than excess.

The vase is glazed porcelain with gilt applied across the entire surface. Gold-ground work requires precise control to keep reflectivity even while preserving fine line definition, and the blue enamel elements are layered cleanly atop the gold, indicating disciplined firing and enamel separation. The rounded body lets the pattern run without interruption, a choice that raises both difficulty and visual reward; such dense treatment at small scale reflects deliberate labor rather than decorative minimalism.

Undated, its decorative language aligns with late 20th-century revival porcelain drawing on classical luxury vocabularies, made for collectors who seek intensity and finish rather than utility. It performs particularly well in cabinet display, as a shelf focal point, or grouped with restrained objects that let the gold ground dominate.
