Issey Miyake 3D Steam Stretch Wave Pleated Peplum Top IM74-FJ517, Teal and Black, Size 2

An Issey Miyake top in steam-stretch fabric that ripples like a contour map, teal over black, with a V-neck, sculpted sleeves and a scalloped peplum that fans out from the hips.

The Piece

Issey Miyake's mainline has spent the last decade developing fabrics that are shaped by steam after the garment is made, so the cloth contracts into three-dimensional relief. The technique lets a flat pattern turn into a sculpture, and the effect on the body is closer to architecture than to tailoring.

This top, model IM74-FJ517, is a striking example. A fine teal-and-black check has been steamed into waves that radiate outward from the waist, so the pattern seems to ripple. The neck is a soft V, the long sleeves are gathered into ruffled ridges, and the hem breaks into a deep, scalloped peplum that flares over the hips.

The fabric is 95% polyester and 5% polyurethane, which gives it a gentle stretch and makes it surprisingly comfortable. It is believed to date from the late 2010s.
