Issey Miyake 1987 Brush Label Leather Three-Piece, Laced Zip Dress, Trousers and Sack Bag, Brown, Size 8

A complete 1987 Issey Miyake ensemble in tobacco-brown leather, with a zip-front pullover dress laced with cords, matching trousers and a drawstring sack bag, all carrying the early brush-script label.

The Piece

The brush-script label marks Issey Miyake's work of the 1980s, the decade in which he built his reputation in Paris with clothes that treated leather, cotton and wool as raw, sculptural materials. Complete ensembles from this period, with every piece still together, are now mostly found in museum collections.

This set is believed to date from 1987. The dress is a long, zip-front pullover with a stand collar and full sleeves, its body crossed by raised seams and lengths of cord laced through the leather in diagonal lines that wrap around to the back. It is worn over narrow, high-waisted trousers in the same leather, and the look is completed by a large drawstring sack bag, sized like a duffel, which is slung over the shoulder as part of the silhouette. The leather is soft and supple, with an aged, slightly crinkled surface and a deep tobacco colour.

As a group it is a document of Miyake's 1980s thinking, and it can still be worn: the dress alone over black trousers, or the full set for maximum effect. Collectors will value the completeness; a single piece would be noteworthy, all three together are rare.

Condition

• Vintage, graded B: clearly used, with age-related wear.
• Dress: rust on the zip, scuffs and colour changes at the shoulders and across the leather, marks on the front and cuffs, small fraying inside; labels partly missing.
• Trousers: marks at the knees and back.
• Bag: scuffs, marks and colour changes outside, scuffs inside; one cord end shows peeling.
• Please study every close-up; sold as an archive ensemble.
