An early Issey Miyake ensemble from 1983 in hand-feeling cotton woven in sand and black stripes, with raw fringed edges: a wrapping shawl top, a strapless camisole and a long column skirt.
The Piece
The early 1980s were the years in which Issey Miyake, alongside Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto, changed Paris. Where Western fashion fitted cloth to the body, Miyake let it wrap, fold and hang, and his textiles, developed with the weaver Makiko Minagawa, were as important as his cuts. Pieces from this period, with the red lower-case issey miyake label, are now firmly museum territory.
This is a complete three-piece outfit, model JM11853. The top is an asymmetric wrap that drapes over one shoulder and is tied or pinned across the body, with a deep collar that can be worn high or folded open. Beneath it sits a strapless, button-front camisole that can also be worn off the shoulder, and the long, straight skirt has an elastic waist and side vents. All three are cut from cotton woven in alternating bands of sand and black stripes, and every edge is left raw so it frays into soft fringes, a deliberate, handmade finish.
Worn together it is a sculptural column; separated, the camisole and skirt are easy pieces on their own, and the wrap top can be thrown over a plain dress.

Condition
- Raw fringed edges by design; some further fraying throughout, in keeping with the finish.
- A pulled thread on the front of the top.
- Light storage odour.
- Good overall for a forty-year-old cotton ensemble.
