Pleated trousers from the IKKO TANAKA ISSEY MIYAKE collaboration, carrying the graphic designer's Sharaku kabuki face across one leg in grey, white, green, orange and black.
The Piece
Ikko Tanaka was one of the great Japanese graphic designers of the twentieth century and a close collaborator of Issey Miyake from the 1970s onwards. After his death in 2002 the Miyake studio returned to his archive, translating his posters into pleated clothing under the IKKO TANAKA ISSEY MIYAKE label. The Sharaku image comes from Tanaka's poster celebrating two hundred years of the ukiyo-e master Toshusai Sharaku, reducing a kabuki actor's face to flat geometric planes.
On these trousers the face spans the front of one leg, with the actor's dark topknot and sky-blue forehead at the hip and a moss-green collar at the knee. The other leg and the back are colour-blocked in grey, green and burnt orange, so the image reads like a poster wrapped around the body.
The cut is a straight, slightly cropped leg with an elastic waist and a relaxed rise. Wear with a plain black or white top to let the print lead.
