Hyakka Ryoran Size M Reversible Sukajan with Giant Koi, Dragon, Clouds & Brocade Floral Jacquard | Black, Ivory, Beige & Gold

Description

A dramatic Hyakka Ryoran Japanese reversible sukajan souvenir jacket, size M, built around two very different interpretations of traditional Japanese imagery.

One side presents a monumental giant koi fish rendered across a softly patterned beige and taupe ground, with black sleeves and ivory side striping. The fish stretches boldly across the front and back, its scales, fins and expressive face depicted in a subdued ink-painting palette that gives the surface a vintage nihonga-like mood.

Reverse the jacket and the energy changes completely.

The second side is dominated by an enormous Japanese dragon sweeping across a deep black satin field. The dragon is worked in ivory, cream and antique-gold tones, with highly graphic scale work, claws, whiskers and cloud forms. The composition is much more forceful and high-contrast than the koi side, making the jacket feel almost like two separate artworks joined into one garment.

The result is classic Hyakka Ryoran territory: bold Japanese iconography, ambitious embroidery, strong contrast and collectible sukajan presence.

Identification

Brand: Hyakka Ryoran
Garment Type: Reversible sukajan / Yokosuka souvenir jacket / embroidered bomber
Tagged Size: M
Primary Motifs: Giant koi fish and dragon
Secondary Motifs: Clouds, floral / brocade-style patterning, traditional Japanese decorative forms
Colors: Black, ivory, cream, beige, taupe, muted gold
Style: Japanese streetwear / wagara / souvenir jacket / wearable art
Construction: Full-zip reversible bomber

Side One: Giant Koi Composition

The first side is unusually elegant for a sukajan.

Rather than relying on bright primary colors, the palette is restrained and almost antique in character.

The body uses a:

  • beige
  • taupe
  • muted cream
  • dusty lavender-brown

brocade-like patterned ground.

Against this sits a monumental dark koi.

The fish is elongated dramatically across the garment, with detailed scale patterning and a strong sense of movement.

The overall effect recalls traditional Japanese painting more than modern streetwear graphics.

Giant Koi Design

The koi is presented with:

  • dense overlapping scales
  • exaggerated fins
  • large expressive eyes
  • rounded head
  • sweeping body movement
  • dark navy-black threadwork
  • subtle gold and gray highlights

On the back, the fish dominates nearly the entire central panel.

Its body bends upward through the composition, creating a sense of swimming motion rather than static placement.

On the front, the koi continues across the torso, making the garment visually interesting from every angle.

Symbolism of the Koi

In Japanese visual culture, koi frequently represent:

  • perseverance
  • endurance
  • transformation
  • strength against adversity
  • ambition
  • good fortune

The image of a koi swimming powerfully against moving water is deeply embedded in East Asian visual tradition.

That symbolism gives this side a quieter but highly meaningful character.

Brocade-Like Background

One of the more distinctive features of this jacket is the patterned body beneath the koi.

Instead of plain satin, the surface appears woven or jacquard-inspired, with a mottled floral / ornamental texture.

This produces a layered visual effect:

embroidered koi over decorative textile ground

The result feels closer to traditional Japanese textile design than a standard smooth satin sukajan.

Sleeve Treatment

The sleeves are primarily black with contrasting ivory or cream side panels.

A narrow red piping line adds a subtle accent.

This restrained treatment keeps attention focused on the large-scale body imagery.

Reverse Side: Monumental Dragon

The reverse transforms the jacket completely.

A massive Japanese dragon dominates a black satin field.

The dragon is rendered in:

  • ivory
  • cream
  • antique gold
  • tan
  • black outline work

and is dramatically larger and more aggressive than the koi composition.

Its head occupies a major portion of the upper body, while the serpentine body extends across the garment.

Dragon Design

The dragon features:

  • large scale patterning
  • open jaws
  • long whiskers
  • articulated claws
  • cloud formations
  • layered body coils
  • strong linear embroidery

The style leans toward classical Japanese tattoo and painting iconography while remaining distinctly suited to sukajan embroidery.

The front carries the dragon across the chest, while the back presents a more expansive composition.

Dragon Symbolism

The dragon is among the most powerful recurring motifs in Japanese decorative art.

It is associated with:

  • strength
  • protection
  • wisdom
  • rain
  • water
  • spiritual authority
  • movement between heaven and earth

Paired with the koi on the reverse side, the jacket becomes especially interesting symbolically.

The koi can represent striving and transformation.

The dragon represents achieved power.

Together, the two sides almost form a visual narrative of ascent and transformation.

A Two-Sided Transformation Theme

This pairing gives the jacket more conceptual depth than a typical reversible sukajan.

Koi Side

Quiet
Painterly
Earthy
Elegant
Traditional
Reflective

Dragon Side

Powerful
Graphic
High contrast
Mythic
Aggressive
Commanding

The contrast makes this piece especially attractive for collectors who value both symbolism and wearability.

Style & Construction

The jacket follows the classic souvenir-bomber silhouette:

  • rib-knit collar
  • rib-knit cuffs
  • rib-knit waistband
  • full front zipper
  • diagonal pockets
  • reversible construction
  • smooth satin-like shell
  • detailed embroidery
  • contrast sleeve panels
  • traditional raglan-inspired shape

The overall construction is characteristic of modern Japanese revival sukajan.

Period

This piece appears consistent with a modern Japanese revival sukajan, likely from the late 20th or early 21st century.

Hyakka Ryoran is particularly known for expressive Japanese traditional motifs rendered in streetwear form, and this piece fits strongly within that design language.

Condition

From the supplied photographs, the jacket appears to present in good overall pre-owned condition.

Visible positives include:

  • strong embroidery
  • rich intact imagery
  • clear scale definition
  • clean dragon composition
  • attractive patterned textile ground
  • healthy-looking ribbing
  • intact zipper
  • wearable reversible construction

As with any pre-owned Japanese souvenir jacket, minor signs of age or storage may be present, including:

  • light wrinkling
  • surface creasing
  • mild rubbing
  • small thread irregularities
  • light discoloration
  • storage marks
  • subtle satin wear

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

Size & Fit

Manufacturer’s Tagged Size: M

Japanese sizing generally runs smaller than contemporary Western sizing.

For international buyers, actual flat garment measurements should be used as the primary fit reference.

Depending on body type and styling preference, this may correspond approximately to a Western small to medium, but fit should not be assumed from the tagged size alone.

Dimensions

Manufacturer’s Tag Size: M

Exact flat measurements to follow.

Recommended measurement reference:

A: Length
B: Chest / pit-to-pit
C: Sleeve length
D: Lower sleeve length
E: Hem width

Please compare these measurements with a jacket you already own.

Display & Wearability

This jacket has especially strong display value because both sides carry full-scale artwork.

The koi side works beautifully in more understated vintage or Japanese Americana styling.

The dragon side is far more theatrical and works as a statement piece.

This makes the jacket equally suitable for:

  • wear
  • photography
  • display
  • Japanese fashion collections
  • sukajan collections
  • wagara collections
  • embroidered textile collections
