The Piece

East Asian legend tells of the koi that swims upstream and leaps the Dragon Gate falls to become a dragon, a story of perseverance rewarded; setting the two creatures together on one jacket makes that transformation the subject. The embroidery follows the expressive, painterly manner of the Edo-period eccentric Soga Shohaku and of nihonga, with the tattoo-art sensibility that sukajan design so often absorbs.
