The moment the hounds are loosed: riders, beagles and foxhounds racing through four cartouches, with crossed whips and a brass horn at the centre, all on Hermès red.
The Piece
Laisser courre is the French hunting call to release the pack. The carré tells it in four scenes set in cream cartouches, hounds in full cry and huntsmen at the gallop, joined by whips, horns and coiled leads.
The red ground is bright and the drawing fine enough to read the hounds’ faces; it knots beautifully, with a hound always showing.
About 88 cm (34.6 in) square, silk twill with hand-rolled edges.
