Japanese mythology, ukiyo-e composition and Yokosuka tradition meet in this reversible Japanese Classic Script sukajan. A great dragon rises through flames and clouds in ivory on black satin, and the reverse answers with a second dragon and wagara wave sleeves.
The Piece
The palette is a restrained monochrome of black, ivory and aged cream, relying on contrast, linework and composition rather than bright color, which gives the jacket a refined yet formidable presence.
The main side presents a large-scale dragon emerging through flames amid traditional Japanese cloud and smoke patterns, in intricate embroidered linework that spreads across the back, with matching dragon chest embroidery and ivory accents on black satin. The reverse shows a different personality: large black and ivory dragon artwork, symmetrical chest dragon motifs and traditional Japanese wave patterns on the sleeves, recalling the flowing movement of ukiyo-e seascapes and textile design.
Unlike destructive Western dragons, the Japanese dragon (龍) stands for divine power, rain and water, protection, good fortune and spiritual authority, its swirling body expressing constant transformation. Clouds evoke heavenly realms and flames spiritual force and purification, while waves (nami) speak of nature's power, endurance and the rhythm of existence; together they form a classic Japanese guardian composition.
The jacket likely dates from the 2000s–2010s Japanese street fashion era, when brands such as Hana Tabidōraku helped revive and reinterpret traditional Japanese embroidery for collectors drawn to Americana, heritage fashion, tattoo culture and vintage-inspired clothing.
