The Piece

The sukajan, or souvenir jacket, took shape in postwar Japan around the Yokosuka naval base, where embroidered satin jackets became mementos for servicemen and later a pillar of Japanese Amekaji style. This example continues that tradition as a custom-made piece, its embroidery built around the Filipino phrase Gising Pilipinas, 'Wake up, Philippines'.
