An unused Gianni Versace top-handle bag in deep navy leather, set with gold sunburst rivets and a swinging chain of Greek-key and sun medallions, complete with its strap, swing tag and dust bag.
The Piece
The sun was one of Gianni Versace’s favourite emblems in the early 1990s, appearing on silks, buttons and bag hardware as a radiant face inspired by classical and Baroque ornament. On this bag it appears twice: as small gold sunbursts set into the leather at the base of each handle, and as a large sun coin hanging from the charm chain.
The bag is a neat trapezoid with a zipped top, two rounded handles and a detachable long shoulder strap, so it carries by hand or crossbody. The navy leather has a fine cross-grain under a high gloss, embossed Gianni Versace on the front corner. A gold chain charm at one side carries a Greek key pendant and the sun medallion. Inside, the black lining holds a zipped pocket and a Gianni Versace label.
The original swing tag records article 847215, colour 62, and notes production under licence in Japan by Why Company, the house’s Japanese partner for accessories at the time. It has never been used and still carries its tag, which makes it unusually complete.
