Object Type:
Samurai Horse Stirrups (Abumi), Matched Pair

Period Attribution:
Late Edo Period (c. 18th–19th century)

Cultural Context:
Japanese Samurai Equestrian Equipment

Materials:
Primary: Iron
Secondary: Lacquer (urushi), red interior coating
Construction: Forged iron body with applied lacquer layers

FORM, STRUCTURE & FUNCTION

These abumi represent the mature Japanese stirrup form developed specifically
for mounted samurai combat. Unlike continental open stirrups, Japanese abumi
are deep, enclosed, and shoe-like, designed to stabilize the rider during
mounted archery, spear combat, and rapid directional changes.

The broad footbed distributes weight evenly, while the raised front guard
protects the toes and locks the foot into position. The suspension loop
(tsurite) shows traditional proportional balance, indicating use with
standard Edo-period saddlery.

Interior surfaces retain red lacquer, a functional and symbolic choice:
- Improved visibility during mounting
- Protection against corrosion
- Association with martial authority

DECORATIVE & SYMBOLIC ANALYSIS

The exterior surface displays subdued utilitarian restraint consistent with
late Edo martial equipment, prioritizing durability over ostentation.

Red lacquer remains visible within the tread surfaces, worn through in places,
indicating authentic historical use rather than decorative reproduction.
Surface wear patterns align with long-term contact from footwear and
environmental exposure.

CONDITION ASSESSMENT

Overall Condition:
Authentic period condition consistent with Edo-era martial use.

Observed Characteristics:
- Surface oxidation and patina across iron body
- Lacquer loss, cracking, and abrasion
- Edge wear on foot platforms
- Structural integrity intact

No evidence of modern casting, artificial distressing, or recent fabrication.

DIMENSIONS & WEIGHT

Approximate Measurements:
Width: 15 cm
Depth: 30 cm
Height: 27.5 cm

Total Combined Weight:
Approx. 4,107 g

Measurements align with full-size adult samurai stirrups rather than
ceremonial miniatures.

AUTHENTICITY & PERIOD JUSTIFICATION

Attribution to the Edo period is supported by:
- Correct abumi silhouette and proportions
- Traditional iron forging techniques
- Period-consistent lacquer application
- Natural wear congruent with age and use

Later Meiji reproductions typically show thinner walls, simplified interiors,
or decorative exaggeration absent here.

COLLECTOR SIGNIFICANCE

This pair represents genuine samurai martial equipment rather than decorative
revival pieces. As intact matched abumi pairs become increasingly scarce, such
examples are valued for:

- Samurai armor collections
- Japanese equestrian history
- Museum or academic reference
- Tokugawa-period material culture

CURATORIAL NOTE

These abumi should be regarded as historical artifacts bearing the physical
record of use, not restored display objects. Their wear is integral to their
historical value and authenticity.

Disclaimer / attribution
Attribution is presented in good faith based on the legible signature and visible construction. We describe with diligence and restraint, prioritizing authenticity and clarity over speculation.
