A powerful Edo-period pair of Japanese samurai stirrups featuring iron construction with silver inlay Sakura Cherry Blossoms decoration.
This matched pair of Japanese abumi (samurai stirrups) dates to the Edo period and reflects the refined martial aesthetics of mounted warriors. Crafted from iron and decorated with delicate silver inlay, each stirrup features scattered sakura (cherry blossom) motifs—a poetic contrast between the beauty of impermanence and the discipline of the warrior class.
The form corresponds to late-Edo regional riding equipment used by samurai retainers rather than battlefield cavalry, emphasizing ceremony, procession, and status. The interior retains its original red lacquer lining, a traditional detail intended to reduce corrosion and improve comfort while riding.
Although the seller notes limited expertise, construction, materials, wear patterns, and decorative vocabulary strongly support an Edo-period attribution rather than later reproduction.
Condition is assessed visually. Age-related wear, rubbing, and surface marks are present, consistent with use and centuries of handling. Interior lacquer shows expected wear. No structural compromises are observed.
