A powerful Edo-period pair of Japanese samurai stirrups featuring iron construction with silver inlay phoenix decoration.

This formidable pair of Japanese samurai stirrups (abumi) dates to the Edo period and is executed in iron with refined silver inlay depicting phoenix motifs. Heavy in hand and architecturally confident in form, these stirrups exemplify the martial elegance and technical discipline of Japanese equestrian fittings.

Stirrups occupied a critical position within the samurai equipment system. More than utilitarian foot supports, they functioned as status markers, balancing devices, and surfaces for symbolic ornamentation. The broad platform form seen here reflects Edo-period riding practices, designed for stability during prolonged mounted activity and ceremonial use.

The phoenix (hōō), rendered in silver zōgan inlay against the dark iron ground, is a symbol of virtue, renewal, and imperial authority. Its inclusion on horse fittings speaks to the aspiration toward moral order and cosmic harmony, even within objects destined for martial contexts.

The inlay work demonstrates confident control, with flowing feathers and scrolling foliage integrated seamlessly into the iron surface. The contrast between silver and patinated iron creates a subdued yet powerful visual rhythm, emphasizing dignity rather than ostentation.

Signed to the interior, the attribution to a Kaga-region craftsman situates the work within one of Japan’s most respected metalworking traditions. Kaga fittings are renowned for precision, durability, and restrained decorative vocabulary.

At approximately 28 cm in depth and weighing a combined 4.1 kilograms, the pair possesses commanding physical presence. These are not decorative reproductions but serious functional artifacts intended for mounted use.

Condition is assessed visually. Age-related wear, rubbing, and surface marks are present, consistent with use and centuries of handling. Interior lacquer shows expected wear. No structural compromises are observed.
