A highly important Edo-period pair of samurai stirrups combining heraldic pine crests, sakura arabesque symbolism, and masterful silver inlay.

This exceptional pair of samurai stirrups (abumi) represents a pinnacle of Edo-period equestrian metalwork, uniting martial function, heraldic identity, and symbolic ornamentation into a single coherent artifact. Forged in iron and lavishly decorated with silver and brass inlay, the pair bears layered iconography that signals both lineage and cultivated taste.

The primary crest motif, the triple-tiered pine (san-dan matsu) enclosed within a circular frame and accompanied by wild branch elements, is deeply rooted in samurai heraldry. Pine imagery signifies endurance, longevity, and steadfastness—qualities prized by warrior houses across generations. The structured tiering of the pine further suggests hierarchy, continuity, and disciplined order, hallmarks of hereditary martial authority.

This crest format is closely associated with clans of the Owari region, where refined heraldic systems developed alongside some of the most technically advanced metalworking schools of the Edo period. The inscription naming Fujiwara Shigehisa situates the work within a lineage-conscious tradition, invoking the prestige of the Fujiwara name as both ancestral reference and mark of cultivated legitimacy.

Beyond heraldry, the surface is enriched with sakura karakusa (cherry blossom arabesque) motifs rendered in silver inlay. The juxtaposition of pine and cherry blossom is deliberate: pine endures through winter, while cherry blossoms embody impermanence and the fleeting beauty of life. Together, they articulate a complete samurai worldview—discipline balanced by poetic awareness.

Technically, the inlay work demonstrates extraordinary control. Fine silver lines are cleanly seated into the iron ground, with brass accents providing warmth and depth. The interior lacquer surfaces retain subtle luster, indicating careful use rather than neglect. These are not ceremonial shells but fully realized functional objects, engineered to support the rider while communicating identity at a distance.

Stirrups of this caliber were not merely accessories; they were integral components of mounted presentation during processions, official duties, and martial display. Their visibility on horseback transformed them into moving heraldic panels, broadcasting clan affiliation and personal status.

Measuring approximately 31 cm in overall length, 13.5 cm in width, and standing 25.6 cm high, with each stirrup weighing roughly 2.1 kg, the pair conveys unmistakable physical authority. The substantial mass reinforces their authenticity as working samurai equipment rather than later decorative reinterpretations.

Condition is assessed visually. Age-related oxidation, surface wear, minor inlay loss, and lacquer wear are present, consistent with centuries of existence. Importantly, no large or structurally compromising damage is observed. The overall state remains cohesive, legible, and historically honest.
