Edo Period Iron-Lacquered Samurai Kabuto with Butterfly Crest
This Edo-period kabuto presents a powerful and legible example of late samurai armor aesthetics, combining battlefield functionality with symbolic refinement. Executed in iron with a deep black lacquer finish, the helmet features a strong frontal profile with a pronounced brow and traditional gakuto-style plate.
Finished in black lacquer, the helmet features a commanding frontal profile with an applied butterfly (chō) crest - rendered in gilt metal, signifies transformation, resilience, and cultivated lineage within samurai heraldry. Such motifs were favored by warrior houses that emphasized both martial capability and refined identity.
The butterfly mon, executed in gilt metal, conveys themes of transformation and lineage. The iron bowl is formed from multiple plates secured with rivets beneath the lacquered surface, while the flared shikoro provides traditional neck protection.
Construction reveals a multi-plate iron bowl secured with rivets beneath the lacquer surface, complemented by flared shikoro lames for neck protection. Interior leather fittings and cord elements reflect period-appropriate assembly methods.
Surface wear—including lacquer loss, abrasions, and oxidation—is consistent with Edo-period ironwork and affirms authenticity rather than detracting from value.
