Object

Edo Period lacquered katana-kake (double sword stand), black urushi with gilt maki-e paulownia crests.

This refined Edo-period katana-kake exemplifies the restrained elegance of samurai interior furnishings. Executed in deep black urushi lacquer and embellished with scattered gilt paulownia (kiri) crests, the stand was designed to display a matched daishō pair—katana and wakizashi—within a domestic or reception setting.

The curled feet and upright posts follow classical proportions seen in late Edo sword furnishings, balancing stability with visual lightness. The kiri mon, long associated with authority, refinement, and cultural prestige, appears here not as heraldry of ownership but as an auspicious decorative motif.

Wear, abrasions, and age-related surface softening are consistent with Edo-period use and handling. These signs of age confirm the object’s functional life rather than detract from its integrity.

Historical Context

During the Edo period, sword stands were essential components of samurai interiors, serving both practical and symbolic roles. The daishō display affirmed status, lineage, and adherence to warrior etiquette.
