Edo Period Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha)

This sculpture depicts Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha) seated in meditation, carved in wood during the Edo period in Japan. The figure is presented in full lotus posture, hands forming the meditation mudra, embodying calm assurance and the promise of rebirth in the Pure Land.

The facial expression is gentle and composed, with softly downcast eyes and balanced features characteristic of Edo-period devotional sculpture. The surface shows a darkened patina with traces of gilding, reflecting age, handling, and long-term veneration rather than later alteration.

The carved mandorla rises behind the figure in a flame-shaped aureole, its surface originally gilt and later reinforced from the reverse with a thin metal sheet for stability. This structural detail is consistent with Edo-period construction practices for wooden Buddhist icons.

At approximately 47 cm in height, this image occupies an intermediate scale suitable for temple halls, household altars of higher rank, or memorial settings. Edo-period Amida images of this quality were produced for Pure Land devotion, emphasizing accessibility, serenity, and doctrinal clarity.

Condition is consistent with an Edo-period wooden sculpture. Surface wear, rubbing, and minor losses are present but do not detract from the overall presence or devotional integrity. The sculpture should be understood as an authentic period work valued for expression, craftsmanship, and historical continuity.
