DESIGN, ICONOGRAPHY & CULTURAL CONTEXT
This sukajan depicts the classic Japanese kaidan “Botan Doro” (Peony Lantern), a tragic ghost story of love, obsession, and death.
The embroidered scene shows skeletal lovers meeting beneath peony blossoms and lantern flames—symbols of fleeting beauty, longing, and the boundary between life and death. The peony, often associated with wealth and romance, is rendered here in burning reds and pinks, transforming prosperity into obsession.
Unlike military souvenir jackets, this piece draws from Edo-period storytelling and theatrical iconography, positioning it as narrative artwear rather than Americana revival.
Each jacket exhibits slight embroidery variation due to hand-guided production, reinforcing its artisan character.
BRAND & COLLECTOR SIGNIFICANCE
Japonisme Kyoto is known for producing story-driven garments rooted in Japanese folklore, literature, and kabuki aesthetics.
The Botan Toro Sukajan stands out as one of the brand’s most elaborate narrative pieces, appealing to collectors of yokai, kaidan, and traditional Japanese visual culture rather than Western souvenir jacket history.
M, L, & XL - 3 sizes available.
Buyer Personas:
• Japanese folklore enthusiasts
• Sukajan collectors seeking non-military themes
• Artwear collectors
• Yokai / kaidan fans
• Japan-made garment collectors

There are 2 type of jackets with different measuring guides as can be seen above. Please be guided accordingly to distinguish which is which.
