CROWS × WORST Kuzugami Tatsuo 九頭神竜男 Reversible Sukajan, Gold Dragon on Black Velvet, Crimson Satin, Size L

A dragon that does not decorate the garment so much as consume it. This CROWS × WORST reversible sukajan carries Kuzugami Tatsuo, 九頭神竜男, as a monumental coiling ryū in antique gold on black velvet, then turns to a stark crimson-and-black satin face signed in brushed kanji.

The Piece

Across the velvet face, an intricately embroidered dragon coils from the shoulder, sweeps across the back and descends through the composition in antique gold, champagne, gray and ivory thread, its body densely worked with individual scales, claws, whiskers and layered ornamental detail. The front is dramatically asymmetrical: most of the torso stays pure black velvet while a huge head and body enter from the wearer’s shoulder and upper chest, with long whiskers, curved horns, layered brows, sharp claws, heavily articulated scales and swirling lines, so the creature seems to wrap the garment rather than sit on it. On the back, the massive dragon twists upon itself through shoulder, upper, central and lower back in a circular movement recalling Japanese tattoo composition and traditional ryū painting, unconfined by any rectangular embroidery field. The restrained, metallic-looking palette gives it an aged tattoo or ink-drawing quality, aggressive without becoming cartoonish, and under low light the velvet nearly disappears, leaving the golden dragon floating against darkness.

The velvet itself acts as negative space. Its pile alternates between deep black and subtly reflective areas as the garment moves, a richer surface than satin from which the embroidery appears to emerge; velvet versions are often especially prized among sukajan collectors for their heavier, more luxurious atmosphere. The detailing, with scale repetition, anatomical twisting, claw articulation, sweeping whiskers and overlapping body sections, recalls an irezumi back-piece translated into thread, which is why sukajan and Japanese tattoo imagery sit so naturally together: both use a moving canvas.

The reverse could almost be a separate jacket: a deep crimson, blood-red satin body with black panels through the sleeves and a black-and-red collar, cuffs and waistband, in the delinquent, racing and bosozoku-inspired idiom. On the chest, black embroidered calligraphy reads 九頭神竜男, Kuzugami Tatsuo, deliberately stylized with sweeping strokes that suggest brush calligraphy, tattoo lettering, gang insignia and personal name embroidery. The kanji for dragon, 竜 / 龍, sits within the name itself, so the enormous ryū on the velvet face becomes a symbolic portrait without any literal character illustration: an imposing traditional dragon sukajan to anyone, and a coded character piece to a CROWS × WORST collector.

In Japanese and East Asian traditions the ryū, or tatsu, differs from the fire-breathing monster of Western folklore: it is associated with strength, authority, protection, supernatural power, water, storms, transformation and mastery over the elements, and often appears among clouds and waves. CROWS and WORST, from Hiroshi Takahashi’s delinquent manga universe, became enormously influential in Japanese street fashion, motorcycle culture and yanki aesthetics, revolving around school-gang rivalry, loyalty, confrontation, personal codes of honor and outsider culture. The sukajan, born in postwar souvenir culture around Yokosuka where American military silhouettes met Japanese embroidery, passed through rockabilly, motorcycle, yanki and bosozoku chapters before reaching contemporary collectible apparel; in yanki and bosozoku dress, names, kanji and aggressive motifs become declarations, and here black velvet, gold dragon and blood-red reverse turn the souvenir jacket into something close to gang regalia.

Condition

• Pre-owned, older Japanese collectible garment showing the natural characteristics of a previously worn velvet and satin sukajan.
• Possible fabric creasing, subtle pile variation, light surface marks, minor satin wear, small thread irregularities, minor rib wear and age-related textile character.
• Velvet changes appearance with nap direction and lighting, so apparent light and dark areas are not necessarily staining; the photographs form an important part of the condition record.

Sizing Guidance

Japanese L can correspond approximately to Western S–M for a relaxed traditional fit, or Western M for a more fitted silhouette, but actual measurements should take priority. Compare against a jacket you own for length (collar seam to hem), chest (pit to pit), sleeve (collar or shoulder to cuff), shoulder where applicable and hem (relaxed across the waistband); with raglan-like shoulders, sleeve reach is often more informative than shoulder width.

Styling and Display

Wear the velvet dragon outward with black denim, black boots and a simple monochrome T-shirt; for a CROWS or yanki look, wide-leg black trousers, engineer boots and chunky accessories, the red side exposed selectively; in an Amekaji key, raw denim, a heavyweight tee, work boots and a vintage cap; or as contemporary luxury streetwear, wide black trousers, minimal sneakers and a plain knit, letting the embroidery carry the outfit. Viewed flat, the dragon side works almost like an embroidered panel and makes a strong wall-mounted display.
