The pleasure quarter of Edo, rendered as a souvenir tour jacket. This vintage Cropped Heads sukajan gathers Yoshiwara nightlife imagery, oiran, geisha and maiko, with sakura, Mount Fuji, cranes and kamon crests, in a manufacturer’s size L.

The Piece

A vintage Japanese souvenir jacket by Cropped Heads devoted to the yūkaku, the licensed entertainment quarters of old Japan, and above all to Yoshiwara in Edo. Its subjects are the figures of that world, oiran, geisha and maiko, set among sakura blossoms, Mount Fuji, cranes and kamon family crests, in the format of a Yokosuka jumper or tour jacket.

Oiran were the highest-ranking courtesans of Yoshiwara, recognized in Japanese art by elaborate coiffures, dense hair ornaments and richly layered robes, and celebrated in ukiyo-e for centuries. Paired here with sakura for transience and beauty, Mount Fuji for permanence and cranes for longevity, the imagery joins the souvenir-jacket tradition to the visual culture of the floating world.
