Two complete jackets in one: a plum velveteen face where twin dragons coil above stylized waves, and a quilted red satin reverse of cranes, pine and flowering branches. This Cropped Heads sukajan sets storm against stillness, carrying Japanese imagery of power and longevity on both sides.
The Piece
The principal face is cut in deep plum-burgundy velveteen and richly embroidered: mirrored dragon heads rise from curling waves on either side of the zipper, elongated dragons descend each sleeve from shoulder to forearm, and an imposing pair of intertwined dragons climbs from stylized waves across the back. Above them, the word “Japan” is embroidered in large, sweeping ivory script, placing the jacket squarely within the Japanese souvenir-jacket tradition. Both faces are intentionally designed, fully wearable compositions, so the garment is a true two-in-one rather than a jacket with an attractive lining.
On the back, the two dragons face one another above turbulent water, their bodies coiling inward into an almost circular composition with open jaws meeting at the center. The palette is nearly monochrome, ivory, pale grey, charcoal and black, with orange-red flames bringing heat into the design. Each dragon shows a sharply outlined horned head, open jaws with visible fangs, flowing whiskers, layered facial scales, strongly defined claws, segmented charcoal underbellies, pale embroidered bodies, red flame accents and surrounding wave and cloud forms. The chest dragons add golden eye accents, red-orange mouths, black and charcoal outlining and fine whisker and mane detail, facing inward to form a guarded central line when the jacket is closed, while leaving enough uninterrupted velvet to let the fabric itself speak.
In Japanese and wider East Asian visual culture, the dragon stands for supernatural power, transformation, authority and the elemental energy of water and sky; unlike the destructive monsters of Western lore, Japanese dragons are often understood as spiritual or natural beings tied to rainfall, oceans and protective energy. Paired and mirrored here, they read as complementary forces rather than simple opponents: balance, interaction and controlled power.
Turned inside out, the jacket becomes brighter and more contemplative. Red satin panels carry pale cranes moving through pine boughs and delicate flowering trees, repeated front and back as one continuous textile composition, framed by black satin raglan sleeves. The palette runs from ceremonial red, soft ivory, muted grey-green and pale beige to black and subtle golden tones, with cream rib-knit trim and fine red and dark striping. Cranes carry associations of longevity, grace, fidelity, good fortune, peace, harmonious partnership and continuity across generations; pine, green through winter, speaks of endurance and resilience. The imagery recalls folding screens, brocades, kimono linings and painted landscapes, here translated into a modern reversible sukajan.
Diamond quilting runs over the printed imagery on the red body and black sleeves, adding structure, texture, visual rhythm, light insulation and reinforcement to the satin, and giving this face a more architectural, textile-driven character. Cropped Heads is recognized among enthusiasts of Japanese embroidered fashion for graphic interpretations of traditional imagery; here the dragon face speaks to tattoo, biker, rockabilly and street-fashion aesthetics, while the crane-and-pine reverse offers a quieter expression for settings where the full dragon composition might feel too dramatic. The twin-dragon layout, rarer than the common single dragon, reads clearly from a distance and rewards close viewing with waves, flames, scales and claws.

Condition
- Pre-owned vintage condition with visible age-related textile and rib-knit patina; the dragon embroidery remains highly visible, with the back composition, chest dragons and sleeve designs retaining strong definition and color.
- Velvet face: natural creasing and storage wrinkles, surface variation in the plum pile, light lint or small surface particles on the dark fabric, and minor rubbing or flattening of the velvet.
- Trim: age toning to the cream rib-knit, discoloration or darkening around portions of the collar, wear and soiling around the cuffs, and uneven coloration along the waistband; the ribbing patina is noticeable and should be considered before purchase.
- Embroidery and edges: mild embroidery puckering, possible loose or projecting threads, small marks or spots consistent with previous use, and general textile wear around edges and pocket openings.
- Satin reverse: wrinkling, surface rubbing on the quilting, minor marks or discoloration on the red and black panels, and natural fading or tonal variation in the printed crane imagery.
- No major structural tear or large area of embroidery loss is visible in the photographs; the zipper is present and both faces appear wearable, though vintage hardware and fabrics should be handled with care.
- The jacket is not presented as newly cleaned, restored or professionally repaired; the photographs form an essential part of the condition record.
Sizing Guidance
Japanese Free sizing does not correspond reliably to a single Western size. Sukajan of this kind typically have shorter body lengths, raglan shoulders, compact chest proportions, ribbed hems that sit near the waist, fuller sleeves relative to the body and a naturally rounded bomber silhouette. Compare against a similar jacket that fits comfortably, checking chest width (armpit to armpit), back length (base of collar to hem), raglan sleeve (center back neck to cuff), underarm sleeve (armpit to cuff) and hem width (straight across the waistband).
Styling and Display
The dragon face sits best with simple supporting pieces that keep the embroidery in focus: black or charcoal denim, wide-leg trousers, Japanese workwear, engineer or motorcycle boots, plain black knitwear or dark turtlenecks, silver accessories, rockabilly clothing, tattoo-inspired streetwear or minimal monochrome outfits. The crane reverse offers a brighter, more refined alternative with raw indigo denim, cream trousers, olive fatigues, black wide-leg pants, white sneakers, vintage athletic wear, Japanese Americana, simple neutral shirts and red, black or ivory layers.
As a display textile, the plum back can anchor a private sukajan collection, a Japanese fashion archive, a boutique, studio or showroom, a costume wardrobe, an exhibition or a wall-mounted display, while the reverse can be shown separately to reveal the crane-and-pine landscape.
