The Piece

COTE MER builds its garments by hand from vintage clothing and Japanese textiles, so that each finished piece exists only once. Here a red vintage Levi's denim jacket provides the foundation, reconstructed with embroidered kimono and obi fabric.

The textile is laid on in a patchwork recalling boro, the Japanese practice of layering and mending cloth until it carries its own history, giving workwear denim the color and ornament of formal Japanese dress.
