The Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman functioned less as a car than as rolling architecture of power. CMC's 1/18 diecast renders its long wheelbase, formal cabin and state-vehicle silhouette with opening features, a sliding sunroof and a working tool set, and this example is close to unused with its minor quirks fully disclosed.
The Piece
This is CMC's large-scale diecast interpretation of the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman (W100), produced from 1968 to 1981. At 1/18 the Pullman becomes a miniature museum object: long wheelbase proportions, formal cabin geometry and the unmistakable state-vehicle silhouette that looks calm even when arriving somewhere historically loud.
CMC sits in the upper stratum of diecast making, closer to a mechanical illustration of a car than a shelf model. The appeal lies in slow looking: door seams, interior depth and the small rituals of opening panels and checking compartments. The included tool set and functional elements, among them a sliding sunroof and lug-nut style wheels removable with the supplied driver, confirm that it is meant to be handled as a precise object.
The Pullman embodies a twentieth-century idea of legitimacy rendered in metal and glass, where length equals authority and silence equals control. The W100's form language is restrained, with flat planes and upright presence, yet its drama is implicit: such a car is designed to mean something. In miniature the cabin reads as a formal room, and the model sits as comfortably with design and architecture collectors as with automotive ones, a modernist object with a political shadow.
The W100 Pullman belongs to the vehicles remembered because they were never mere transportation; they were stage properties for history, used in processions and state occasions. CMC's contribution is to treat the car as a material-culture artifact to be read through its details, openings, compartments and tools, making this a single statement limousine for a display that mixes automotive design, mid-century modern taste and cinematic history.
