Cherry blossoms, flowers and multicolor butterflies gather on this vintage souvenir jacket, a kawaii reading of the sukajan composed in the spirit of Hanae Mori, the Japanese couturier whose butterfly became an emblem of postwar Japanese elegance. Offered in manufacturer's size XL.

The Piece

This vintage Japanese souvenir jacket is composed around sakura cherry blossoms, flowers (hana) and multicolor butterflies (chōchō), with script lettering, in a kawaii register. Its butterfly-and-blossom theme is presented à la Hanae Mori, in homage to the designer rather than as her work.

Hanae Mori, the first Japanese designer admitted to the Paris haute couture syndicate, made the butterfly her signature, a motif that came to symbolize the meeting of Japanese sensibility and Western fashion. On a sukajan, alongside the cherry blossom, it takes on a lighter, more playful note.
